Mary Heilmann: Looking at Pictures at the Whitechapel Gallery

Added on by Miguel Sopena.

Really enjoyed the Mary Heilmann: Looking at Pictures exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery (08/06 – 21/08/2016). Heilmann (b 1940), a ceramicist and painter from San Francisco, started off playfully arranging her paintings around simple geometric structures like the grid and the square. The first room in the exhibition focuses on her earlier work (from the 1970s onwards), which uses subtle, comparatively restrained colour schemes, and includes a small ceramics section. The exhibition continues upstairs with a small section devoted to works on paper and another to furniture and later paintings in which Heilmann, whilst retaining similar compositional schemes, experimented with much brighter tones (personally, I'm partial to her earlier, subdued period, but check it out for yourselves!). Well worth a visit to this fabulous space in East London.
